Changing Windshield Wipers

Updated: Feb 2

By Carters Towing

Windshield wipers, in particular, play an essential role in road safety during the cold winter months and will keep snow at bay, yet they are more than often neglected. Worn out our malfunctioning wipers will be ineffective in keeping your windshield clean, thus creating visibility problems and leaving you at the mercy of the weather.

Here at Phoenix Towing, we’re all about road safety, and that’s why it’s essential to stay on top of regular maintenance and keep every part of your car in excellent shape. Here’s our guide on how to replace windshield wipers fast and easy

Figure Out The Size

The first step in replacing your windshield wipers is identifying the size and type of blades you need. Contrary to popular belief, windshields are not universal and may vary depending on the type of car you drive. The easiest way to do this is to refer to the vehicle’s owner’s manual or measure them by yourself with a tape measure. You could also consult your local auto parts store

Out With The Old In With The New

Once you bought your new windshields, it’s time to get rid of the old ones. Now, removing wiper blades is easier said than done if you have no clue what you’re doing. Every windshield has a specific unlatching mechanism. Some can be simply removed by pinching and pulling the blade. There are also the hook style windshields that are removed by opening the safety flap and pushing the blade out. Again, referring to the owner’s manual is the fastest way to figure out how to remove windshield wipers.

Make Sure They’re Attached Firmly

You’ll want to double-check if your new windshields are fitted properly. Once you attach the blades and close the safety flap, you should hear a clicking sound. The sound should be a clear indicator that the blade is attached firmly. Start the ignition and give them a test run just to make sure. Also, don’t forget to remove the plastic protector found on the rubber side of the blade.

And there you have it, a simple guide on how to replace windshield wiper. Windshields usually last about six months, depending on various factors such as weather conditions and the time of year. Winter months can be especially taxing on the rubber material. If you know you’re going to be driving in harsh conditions, it is best practice to inspect your windshield wipers before leaving the garage. You don’t want to get caught with a faulty blade during a downpour.

However, if you do get caught with malfunctioning windshield wipers during heavy rain or a snowstorm, we recommend pulling over and calling for roadside assistance. It’s better to be late than to risk spinning out of control and crashing. Want to find out more about driving safely during the winter months? Then make sure to check out our blog!
