Have you ever parked your vehicle somewhere and returned to find it won’t start? UGH! What an incredible inconvenience, especially when you have no idea what caused the dilemma. Listed below are the five most common reasons a car won’t start and the things you should begin to check first:
1. Dead Battery
A dead or drained battery is one of the most common reasons a car won't start. It's very easy to identify! Begin by checking the starter. Listen for a clicking sound when you try starting the engine. Clicking but not cranking in the engine may be an electrical issue, so keep this in mind. Another way to check for a dead battery is to try using connections such as windshield wipers or automatic windows, as these require power from the battery to operate. While possible to fix with a quick jump from some battery cables, there's a chance the battery is beyond repair and you need to get towed to an auto shop to have the battery replaced.
2. The Ignition Switch
When the battery can be ruled out as the source of trouble, consider checking the ignition switch. This is quite easy to do. Simply check for a feature where the battery is needed to work – turning on headlights is a quick and easy way to determine this. If the battery is working, but the vehicle won’t start, there is more than likely an issue with the ignition switch.
3. The Starter
The starter is quite like the ignition switch. It is usually the reason most cars that don’t have dead batteries won't start. Checking for starter issues is very simple. Just listen for a clicking sound when turning the key in the ignition. This is a sure sign the starter has seen better days.
4. You're Out of Gas
You’d be surprised at the number of people whose cars won’t start due to a lack of fuel in the tank! Sometimes the answer is staring you right in the face, as is often the case with an empty gas tank. Always check your fuel gauge to see how much gas is left in the tank. This common mishap occurs much more often than you'd think.
5. The Fuel Filter
When a fuel filter is clogged it prevents gas from reaching the engine; thus the car doesn’t start. Fuel filters need to be changed every 10,000 miles to ensure things are running effectively and efficiently.
